Yes, that capital S is intentional. It represents the deepest, truest version of you.
What “Attune to Yourself” Actually Means
Attune to yourSelf is simply this: learning to check in with your physical body, your mind, your emotions, and that quiet spiritual layer underneath; and tuning into / hearing what they need. Not from a place of “I should fix this” or “I’m failing again,” but from curiosity and kindness.
It’s the difference between scanning your Apple Watch and thinking “ugh, my HRV is trash today, I’m going to mess up with my health” versus sitting with yourself for two minutes and going, “Hmm… my shoulders are up by my ears and I feel a little heavy in my chest. Of course I do! It’s been a week. What do I need right now?”
If shame, anxiety, or that old critic voice shows up while you’re answering the "what do I need right now?"... totally normal. That’s part of the process. Those feelings are usually tied to old patterns, i.e. we go go go on 100% until we crash. Then and ONLY then do we not feel guilty for slowing down and resting. So when we try to rest without the crash, we may feel wrong, or ashamed.
The magic here is in meeting yourself the same way you’d meet a friend: “Of course you feel that way. You don’t have to change a single thing right this second. I’m right here with you.” That’s when the door cracks open and a new layer of you gets to unfold.
Why This Matters So Much Right Now
We’ve all seen it in the wellness world: one side pushes us into full perform-and-optimize mode. Oura ring, Whoop strap (love mine), 10-step supplement routine, labs that have to be “perfect,” chasing that “ideal” body while also trying to be the most present mom, the most productive woman, the most everything. It it can feel good for a minute… until you realize you’re never actually in the present moment because you’re always tracking, tweaking, and low-key judging yourself.
Then we swing the other way. “Screw it, I’m done with all that pressure.” We book the massages, roll out the yoga mat every day, give ourselves permission to rest… and suddenly the house is a disaster, the to-do list is screaming, weight creeps on, and that low-level depression shows up because we’ve tipped too far into avoidance.
Let’s be done with the extreme swing. Both sides have gifts. Performing feels amazing when it feels steady and capable. Rest feels like pure medicine when you need it. The skill is learning to move fluidly between them instead of getting stuck in either extreme.
And the only way to do that without burning out or checking out is to attune to yourSelf. Over and over again. This somatic, inner work is the BEST work. Invaluable. W
hen you can hear your own signals with compassion, you know exactly when it’s time to lean into action and when it’s time to pull back and restore. No shame. No guilt. Just honest, kind information from the one person who actually knows you best… you.
The Science Bit (because I’m a nerd and have to know the ‘why’)
Here’s what research says: when people build a strong internal locus of control (that deep trust that you can understand and respond to your own needs), they end up with better health outcomes across the board. One 2020 study found people with high internal locus of control had lower stress, more consistent movement they enjoyed, less reliance on quick-fix meds/treatments, and way better overall health ratings.
Other research ties it directly to stronger self-care habits and less burnout.
Attuning to yourSelf is literally how you grow that inner trust. It’s not woo-woo. It’s how you stop outsourcing your wellness to gadgets, trends, or even well-meaning coaches and start leading/making decisions from the inside.
Your Practice:
Pick one (or all), they don't take long.
These aren’t more things to add to your list. See if they can be tiny pauses that feel like texting your best friend (except the friend is you). Try one a day for the next week and watch how much clearer your “perform or rest” decisions become. No perfection required.
Practice 1: The Body Check-In
Sit or stand wherever you are. Put one hand on your belly, one on your heart. Take three normal breaths and just notice: Is there tension anywhere in my body? Ease? Hot, cold, heavy, light? That’s it. Then ask: “What does my body actually want right now? Water, to stretch, to lie down, to move, social connection?” No fixing, just noticing. You’ll be shocked how often the answer is obvious once you stop critiquing the signal.
Practice 2: Of Course Check-In (the emotional)
Grab your phone notes or a scrap of paper. Write down 1–3 feelings that are here right now (even the ugly ones). Then speak (or whisper) to yourself out loud: “Of course I feel overwhelmed. The kids have been nonstop. Of course I feel frustrated with my body. I’ve been comparing again.” End with “And I’m still okay right now.” This one single sentence is usually the moment the shame starts to loosen its grip.
Practice 3: The Polarity Pulse
Quick scan: On a scale of 1–10, how much am I in “perform/optimize” mode right now (tracking, pushing, proving)? How much am I in “rest/avoid” mode (scrolling, canceling everything, house chaos)? If either number is over an 8, ask: “What would a tiny, kind step toward the middle look like today?” One walk instead of a 5K training run. One load of laundry instead of a full spring clean. Fluid, not forced.
Practice 4: Needs Radar
Close your eyes and ask three questions (out loud if you want. It lands different):
What do I need to feel steady today?
What would feel like real rest, or aligned work?
If my future self who already feels balanced and aligned was here, what would she tell me?
Write the first thing that pops up. That’s your attunement “download”.
Practice 5: Compassionate Mirror (anytime bonus — 30 seconds)
Look at yourself in the mirror or even in your phone camera. Smile (even a small one) and say: “I see you. I’ve got you. Whatever season you’re in right now is welcome here.” Sounds cheesy until you do it consistently and realize how different you feel.
Closing / Call to Action
That’s it. Five minutes. No apps, no trackers, no pressure. The more you practice Attune to yourSelf, the more naturally you’ll flow between doing and resting. The more you'll trust yourself.
Drop in the comments or our community which practice you tried today and what you noticed. We’re all in different seasons, and that’s the whole point! We get to meet ourselves (and each other) right where we are, with zero judgment and a whole lot of curiosity.
You’ve got this. Your Self already knows the way.
