The Contrast Practice
Gratitude is most physiologically potent when generated through contrast — imagining the loss of something good and then feeling relief at its presence. Studies by Robert Emmons (UC Davis) show this activates measurably stronger grateful affect than listing things you appreciate without contrast.
THE PRACTICE
Choose one thing from yesterday's inventory. Spend 2 minutes genuinely imagining life without it. Let that land. Then return to the reality that you have it. Notice what shifts in your body. That shift — not the thought, but the physical sensation — is the practice. Stay with it for 60 seconds.
